About Me

Educational History:

I graduated from McPherson High School in 1976.

I graduated from Emporia State University in 1980.

I graduated from Wichita State University in 1987.

Degrees and Certifications:

I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education (Grades K-8).

I have a Master’s Degree in Counseling & School Psychology (K-12).

I also have a certification in Early Childhood Education.

Professional Development:

I am on the board of Bright Futures of Augusta. I have been to the Bright Futures Conference in 2016 and 2017. This conference has presented on the topics of poverty, bullying, foster care, suicide and many other relevant topics. I look forward to attending this conference again. We have heard nationally known speakers such as Ruby Payne, Ashley Rhoads Courter and Dave Pelzer who wrote A Child Called “It.”

I  attended a conference on Poverty in 2017. This conference, along with the issues of poverty, addressed topics such as trauma in children and young adults, the effect of adverse childhood experiences (ACES) on children, and how to teach in a truama informed way in our schools and classrooms.

I have also participated in two poverty simulations in our district which was an eye opening experience. It helped me to truly understand what people in poverty deal with on a daily basis. This is an issue I am very interested in and I will attend other conferences, workshops, etc on this topic.

Current Position:

I started counseling at Garfield in 1993. I have been with the district since 1982. I am the counselor at both Garfield and Robinson Elementary. I counsel with K-5th grade students. I teach class guidance lessons to the students, counsel individually and in groups and talk with parents. I work with organizations such as Department of Children and Families, South Central Mental Health Center, Augusta Police Department and Bright Futures of Augusta. I also coordinate the weekend food program with the Kansas Food Bank and organize the Christmas Giving Trees project each year. I love my job and the students I teach.

Previous Position:

I worked in the Peabody-Burns School District for two years before coming to Augusta. I started in that district in 1980 teaching fourth grade. While in college, I student taught at Butcher Lab School on the campus of ESU and worked in a church daycare in Emporia. I grew up with a career teacher and principal. My dad taught high school business and I wanted to teach from a very young age. My dad had a huge impact on my desire to be a teacher.

Family Information:

I am married and have two children, Mallory and Connor. They both graduated from Augusta High School in 2006 and 2015 respectively. My husband works for the Kansas Turnpike. My daughter is a Farmers Insurance agent in Wichita. She graduated from WSU in 2010. My son graduated from Butler Community College in 2017. He is continuing his education in order to be a nurse anesthetist.

Personal Information:

When I am not teaching I enjoy reading, exercising, going to movies, being with friends and family and just enjoying life. I have been on many committees at my church and currently serve on the Bright Futures Board of Augusta. I volunteer at the Augusta Theater and belong to a social sorority, Xi Gamma Theta. I also am vice president of the Augusta Education Association and serve on the negotiations team for our district. I am never at a loss for things to do. I like to be busy.
